Have you ever thought of the negative effect of social media on kids? Though the use of social media in education has been found to encourage students to be more engaged in education, social media still poses a great treat to teenagers. While many believe the benefits of social media has helped build more dynamic and technology oriented teenagers, its effect on kids and teenagers still worries concerned parents all over the world. In this post, I have decided to highlight these negative effects.
A teenager might watch a TV show and love the lead character who might have exhibited some wrong behaviors in the film. That teenager might begin to exhibit such bad characters like homosexuality, smoking, drinking and many more. Parents who watch sex films in the presence of their children are introducing them into exhibiting such characters. Whether parents and teachers like it or not, teenagers are constantly looking at the behavior of their elders and people around them. Whatever they are taught or exposed to is what they end up doing.
The rate at which the world is leaning towards social media sites for communication is increasing. Students and teachers are exploring the use of social media for communication as the day goes by. Social media has been shown to affect the way people communicate face to face in the world- many people are accustomed to the use of coded languages to communicate and the use of slangs. This has been shown to affect communication skills of people when they want to address a large gathering, when attending an interview and many more.
With the use of social media on the rise, students are getting more attached to the internet. IT gadgets have now become their closest pal which they use to post every little detail of their life. Some get detached from the real world- failing to respond even when spoking to. This has been found to cause them loose sleep, loose time, stay detached from family hence loosing their relationship.
Many young internet users are lured by sex predators. The rate, at which sexual ads are increasing, even on religious sites, is becoming alarming. Many internet sites allow for nude pictures to be shown. This may expose teenagers to early sex. The internet, most times make people do or say what they will not do when they are face to face with colleagues. Also teachers who are accustomed to the use of social media sites for communication with their students might be tempted to engage in inappropriate relationship with them through the internet. For these reasons, critics are calling for regulation and for removing social networking from classrooms, despite the positive effects they have on students and the essential tools they provide for education in today's digital world.
Studies have shown that students who spend much time on facebook tend to have lower grades in school. Social media sites are well designed and programmed to captivate the mind of people. Young online users who lack time management and maturity will find it very difficult to control their use of the internet.
